Understanding Death

Keeping the memory

When someone dies, it doesn't mean that we forget about them. It can be nice to do things that help keep the memory of that special person alive in your mind and in your heart. You will probably have some ideas of your own, but here are some things that others kids have done:

  • Keep something special that belonged to the person that died - this can help you to think of the fun you had with them and how much you loved them
  • Carry a photo of them - you can carry it in your pocket or bag and have them with you whenever you need to look at them
  • Keep traditions - like still celebrating the person's birthday and other important dates
  • Talk to people - about your special memories of that person

Death can be a confusing and sometimes worrying thing to think about. If you would like to talk some more about death and dying or anything else at all, you can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or use our web or email counselling services. We will listen to you and help you work out what might help.
